Ghosts of Tabletop Past & Future

I’m not saying that we’re the best tabletop gaming blog in the world. That’s for you to say and for me to be sued by Richard Herring. But as amazing as we are it would be a dull world if you only ever read our glorious gospel to learn of the world of board gaming.

To bring in the turn of the year, two of our favourite sources of knowledge have produced features to mark the event. One looking backwards; the other forwards.

RPS – Cardboard Children – Game of the Year 2011

Rab Florence writes a weekly board game column for Rock Paper Shotgun, an otherwise PC Gaming focused blog, titled Cardboard Children. As hinted at earlier, we may be close to godliness but this man…THIS CREATURE! …IS THE DEVIL!!! I have spent far too many pennies on his passionate recommendations.

This has been concentrated down into Game of the Year 2011 feature that is well worth a read. If you can get through it without wanting at least one of the games mentioned then you are a better person that I.

Shut Up & Sit Down – Top 10 Games Coming In 2012

Looking forwards to 2012 is an excellent feature by the lads at Shut Up & Sit Down. Quintin Smith and Paul Dean are best known for their very entertaining board gaming show that is already several episodes strong.

A lot of people seem to miss that they have a regularly updated blog too featuring extra reviews on top of those they make for the show. If you can read their article on the top games to look forward to over the next year without wanting at least one of the games mentioned then you are such a better person that I that you should start worrying about transcending to a higher-plane if you’re not careful.

The Little Metal Dog Show – Episode 36

As a bonus, as they not a suitable Ghost to be included in the title and penalised for it, is the podcast and blog at The Little Metal Dog show. The most recent podcast is a pleasant chat between the regular host, Michael Fox, and a few of his friends nattering on about what gaming fun they’ve had over the past year. The fact that two of those friends write at this blog is purely a coincidence and I shall mention it no further!!!

What’s really worth reading and listening to on The Little Metal Dog Show are the podcasts and articles all about the board gaming convention at Essen. Michael was a very happy bunny this year because he got to go to it to not only find out what games would be released over the next year but to collect so many new games that his airplane had to set sail over choppy seas to get him back to the UK.

If you have any regular sources of board gaming info I’d love to hear them in the comments.
